On my mac with TexShop v 2.47, sourcefontbigger (or smaller) work. Its not common because most systems use ASCII or UTF-8 (or UTF-16) for text files, but other encodings are possible. Text Edit, the free text editor on the Mac, saves in Unicode by default, but to ensure that you are saving a Unicode.
In the Encoding menu, change the value from ANSI to UTF-8 or other appropriate Unicode value. Go to the File then Save or Save As… menu. The last option in the Save File dialog is a Plain Text Encoding. Its in Russian, but usage is pretty straightforward - paste mangled text into. Notepad, the free text editor on Windows, saves in ANSI Latin encoding by default. But if there is one thing, I miss a lot, the thing that Windows does better than Mac. Create a new document in Notepad++, make sure Encode in ANSI is selected in the Encoding menu, paste the text there, then choose Convert to UTF-8 without BOM in the Encoding menu.
